Recently due to changes in the curriculum, computer coding and robotics have been introduced at all schools. To help you to understand and support your child, Family Learning are running a free coding course for parents at Mount Hawke Academy starting on January 22nd 1-3 pm, with your child joining us at 2.30 to work with us. It's a great subject and a lot of fun making Apps, Games and programming Robots. Potentially this may help your child onto a great carrer path in this rapidly expanding area. Mental Health Awareness and UnderstandingIt is well documented that at least one in four of us will experience some form of mental ill-health during our lifetime, the reality is that it could well be us or someone we know. Mental Distress F.I.R.S.T. A.I.D. is an intervention skill used on people who are or may be developing mental ill-health, who are in mental distress or suicidal. As a first aider your main role is to keep this person safe until they are able to access appropriate help or the crisis is over. It’s important to understand that as a first aider you do NOT have to be a counsellor or a therapist. Aim of the course: To provide an overview of mental ill-health and what various conditions look like To help attendees understand how mental ill-health can impact on individuals and those around them To help attendees know how to support someone in mental distress or with suicidal thoughts/behaviours by using a Mental Distress First Aid & Suicide First Aid intervention skill Where to go and how access help Objectives: Be able to help a person experiencing mental distress or mental ill-health Know what certain conditions look like and people behave Know how to spot the early signs and symptoms Be able to deliver a Mental Distress/Suicide F.I.R.S.T. The Power of An Active SchoolThis one day course will give colleagues an understanding of the importance of physical education, school sport and physical activity to the health and wellbeing of children and that active kids, achieve better. You will explore the principles that underpin an outstanding PE lesson through lots of practical examples and have the opportunity to plan and lead a session with colleagues. This will also include how to adapt and differentiate in a lesson using the STEP method - Space, Task, Equipment and People as well as covering important health and safety tips. The course will also focus on how increase physical activity throughout the school day and identify areas where activity can take place with some simple solutions. Suitable for NQTs and early career teachers.  The day will be delivered by Kate Thornton-Bousfield from Youth Sport Trust, who is the lead on Primary Physical Literacy.
